9. Standing Avalokiteshvara – Nepal, 16C AD, 138cm high. Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of compassion, of which the Dalai Lama is an incarnation. In his headdress is a small figure of the Tathagata Meditation Buddha Amitabha seated with his hands in meditation mudra. Semi-precious jewels are inset in the necklace, belt, anklets and in the forehead in the Nepali manner.
